i used to have this recurring nightmare where me and my friends, all elementary school aged would in at my elementary school and all the kids would have to pick one side to hide: our playground or in the school. We were to be hiding from a witch that wanted to cook us over her cauldron and eat us. no matter which side i picked, which i almost always picked inside the school, we would have a little head start until the witch came after me. no matter if i decided to stay outside or inside, the witch would always go whatever way i went and would only target me. also, if i started outside on the playground, it would always start to immediately rain and i always "died" so quickly outside, where inside, you could see through the windows it was very cloudy and i often lived for much longer. i had never escaped the school however if i did choose to run/hide inside. Almost every time I was caught by the witch and roped up above her caldron and she would spin me like a rotisserie chicken. just about every time, one of my friends would come to save me. me getting chased/the dream only ended when i woke up.
Dreams involving being chased or hunted often symbolize feelings of anxiety, fear, or being overwhelmed in waking life. In your case, the recurring imagery of a witch trying to catch and cook you can represent a deeply ingrained fear or challenge—perhaps something you felt powerless against as a child or still resonate with today.
Here are some specific interpretations of the elements in your dream:
The Witch: The witch might symbolize an authoritative figure or a daunting challenge in your life. She represents a sense of danger or threat, possibly relating to fears you faced in childhood, such as feeling vulnerable or bullied. The act of her hunting you down indicates an anxiety that seems to target you personally.
The School Setting: Schools often represent a place of learning and socialization, but they can also evoke memories of pressure to perform and fit in. Your dream may reflect memories of childhood fears, perhaps relating to social dynamics or the challenges you faced in school.
The Playground vs. Inside the School: The choice between hiding outside and inside suggests a conflict between wanting to engage with the world (playground) and seeking safety and security (inside the school). The rain that often falls outside could symbolize emotions like sadness or turmoil, reinforcing the notion that the outside world felt hostile or unsafe.
Being Caught and Rescued: Continually being caught by the witch and almost always needing rescue from friends might reflect a struggle with self-confidence and reliance on peers. It could signal feelings of inadequacy or a sense that you need help to overcome challenges. The fact that a friend often comes to save you may speak to the importance of camaraderie and support in your life.
The Recurrence and Ending: The fact that this was a recurring nightmare implies that it addressed a deep-seated fear or issue that persisted over time. The dream ending only when you wake up points to feelings of being trapped or helpless in the situation, indicating unresolved feelings or fears that may still need to be addressed.
Overall, this dream seems to reflect childhood fears and possible anxieties as you navigated social situations, feelings of vulnerability, and the need for support from friends. It might be helpful to reflect on whether similar fears or challenges are present in your current life and consider ways to address or confront them.
